Liter of Light!

It's true! You do learn something new everyday. Did you know that you can make light bulbs from plastic soda bottles? Neither did I and now we do!

Started in The Philippines, by Illac Diaz and the My Shelter Foundation, the "Isang Litrong Liwanag" project - translated as, a Liter of Light provides over 10,000 homes with this really inexpensive and energy efficient way to light up households that either can't afford electricity or that don't have access to it. Get this...for about $3, you can light your entire home! Seeing that many homes in this country are built closely together, windows are considered a luxury.

The goal is to reach one million homes by next year and the trend is said to be swiftly taking off, according to CNN.

The concept is simple. Based on an invention by an engineer from Amy Smith, an engineer from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, these recycled plastic bottles are filled with bleach and water and then affixed into holes on the roof. The bottles then refract the sun's rays to create about 55-watts worth of light.

Pretty darn cool!
